The short answer
As they mature, yes. Leaves and seeds collect in gutters and valleys, shade encourages moss, and overhanging branches rub on tiles and block outlets. Planned planting of 2,700 trees and 26 km of hedgerow makes regular clearing worth building into a roof's upkeep.
Tadpole was designed as a garden village, with a 99 acre Nature Park and planting throughout. That is good for the place and has consequences for roofs as the trees grow.
Q3.1What do leaves and seeds do to gutters and outlets?
Gutters are the first casualty. Leaf litter and seeds build up, water backs up behind them and spills over the edge, wetting the fascia and the wall below. In a valley, debris dams the channel and forces water sideways under the tiles. On a flat roof, a blocked outlet leaves water standing, which is how many leaks begin. Clearing these by hand once or twice a year is simple, and our gutters, soffits and fascias page covers the repair side.
Q3.2Is moss on a shaded slope a problem?
Roofs in shade stay damp for longer, and moss takes hold. A light film is harmless, whereas deep moss stays wet against the tile and can push edges up. Gentle removal beats hard pressure washing, which can damage the tile surface.
Q3.3What if birds or bats are using the roof?
Hedgerows and trees draw birds and bats, which are protected by law, so if a roof space is in use we stop and take advice before disturbing it.
Q3.4How do you reach a roof between tight garden plots?
Garden village layouts often have narrow gaps between houses and planting right up to the walls. That can make ladder access awkward and means shrubs or fences may need moving before a repair. When we survey, we note how the roof will be reached, whether a tower or scaffold is needed, and who has to agree to it, so the quote has no surprises on the day. A gutter run that can only be reached from a neighbour's garden is worth mentioning at the start.
Plan any pruning with the owner of the tree. The roof is easier to look after when branches stay clear of the tiles and the gutter line, and a short check each autumn after the leaves fall catches most problems before they reach a ceiling.
