The short answer
Roof blinds control glare and some summer heat, and they can make an old conservatory usable again at far less outlay than a new roof. They do not stop leaks, cure condensation or add much winter warmth, because they hang inside the glazing. If the roof is tired, a blind merely screens the fault from view. Replacement is the answer once the roof itself has failed.
What blinds actually do for the room
A blind works by stopping sunlight before it warms the air inside. The nearer it sits to the outer surface, the better it performs, so a blind hung under the glass is the weakest option and one fitted outside is the strongest. Pleated, pinch-pleated and Roman-style roof blinds slide along tracks that follow the slope, and they can be operated by hand or by motor.
In summer they cut glare on screens and soften the light for anyone sitting beneath a south-facing roof. Reflective or thermal fabrics help a little with the heat, and a lighter colour reflects more than a dark one. A conservatory that is merely uncomfortable on a few sunny afternoons may be well served by a decent blind alone.
In winter the effect is small. A fabric blind does not insulate the way a solid roof does, and it traps cold air against the glass. If your complaint is a chilly room, a blind is the wrong tool. Our page on lightweight tiled roofs covers one route that deals with both.
What blinds cannot do
There are problems that no blind addresses, and it helps to name them before spending money.
- Leaks. A blind hides a drip and may stain, but the water still enters. Fix the roof first.
- Condensation. Fabric between you and the glass can make the roof surface colder and worsen the problem, as our page on conservatory roof condensation explains.
- Ageing sheets. Polycarbonate yellows, scratches and goes brittle, and a blind will not reverse that.
- Structure. A sagging frame or rotten fascia stays sagging and rotten behind the fabric.
- Noise. Rain still drums on a thin roof whether or not you can see it.
HomeBuilding and The Eco Experts both give polycarbonate roofs a working life of around 10 to 15 years, so a blind added late in that range shades a covering that is about to be replaced anyway. A glass roof lasts about as long as its seals do, and the same logic applies once those begin to fail.
How the costs compare
Blinds cost far less than a roof, with the final bill set by the span, the fabric, any motors and the complexity of the shape. A blind maker is the right person to price them. Roof replacement figures are easier to compare. MyBuilder's guide, updated in August 2026, gives an average of around £4,500 for replacing a conservatory roof, within a range of £2,000 to £10,000 or more. Polycarbonate sits at £2,000 to £5,000, glass at £3,000 to £8,000 and solid roofs at £5,000 to £10,000.
Those are national figures, not a quote. On your conservatory the cost moves with the footprint, the strength of the existing frame, any reinforcement, access and the choice of covering. The survey leads to one written price for the whole job, and when you weigh up other prices, find out whether each covers VAT and scaffolding. Outlay on blinds can also be spent twice if they have to come down when the roof is replaced, so time the two decisions together.
When blinds are enough, and when to replace
Blinds are a sensible choice when the roof is sound and dry, the frame is solid, the conservatory is used in the warmer months and the main complaint is glare or midday heat. They are also a reasonable stopgap while you save for a new roof.
A new roof earns its cost when the roof leaks, the sheets have failed, the room is unusable in winter or you want it to serve as a proper living space. A new roof can also be paired with blinds afterwards, which is how many conservatories end up being used. If you are weighing options, read about planning a solid conservatory roof and how long polycarbonate lasts.
A solid roof counts under the Building Regulations and calls for a building control application, which we explain and process where the work is notifiable. See the main conservatory roof replacement page for the full picture.
Fitting blinds to a new or existing roof
If you fit blinds, tell the fitter what lies above them. Brackets fixed through a roof can break the seal, so they should go into the frame or bars rather than the sheet. On a solid roof, blinds are less useful, but roof windows with integrated blinds can be added for ventilation and light control.
Do not hang heavy fixtures from polycarbonate or glass roof bars that were not designed to take them. Ask whoever fits the blinds to check the loading, and tell us if you are planning both jobs so we can coordinate the order of work.
What we can do
The visit looks at roof and frame together, and your quote arrives in writing afterwards, backed by pictures of the room. If the roof is sound and glare is the whole complaint, the honest advice is to buy a blind and keep your money. Should the roof need replacing, the report explains why and which covering suits the room.
New roof work is guaranteed for 10 years in writing, and the old panels are taken off site by us. Dial 01793 626096, or start a WhatsApp chat or send the page form if you prefer to write first. Do mention the direction your conservatory faces, as that shapes how much shading matters.
