Our roofing work in Swindon, on video

One of the team picked up a camera and made a short film about the work. It is home-made and it is ours, so this page puts it beside the jobs it stands for.

The short answer

This is the promotional video made by a member of the Skyline Swindon Roofing team. It is a short, home-made introduction to the business and the work we do on roofs. Beneath it we list the jobs we take on, from repairs and re-roofs to flat roofs, chimneys, gutters and commercial buildings, each with a link to its own page.

Who made the film, and why it sits on the site

The film was made by a member of the team, not by an agency. That is why it looks like a roofer's film rather than a polished advert, and we have left it that way on purpose. Choosing a roofer is partly a judgement about people, and a few minutes of watching tells you more than a page of adjectives could.

A video cannot tell you everything. It will not tell you whether your ridge has slipped or a flashing has lifted, and it will not give you a price. What it can do is put a face and a way of working to the name before you pick up the phone. The rest of this page covers what a film cannot: the range of work, how an enquiry becomes a finished roof, and what to ask any firm before you hire it.

The home page of Skyline Swindon Roofing has the full list of services and the towns we cover, should you prefer to start with the overview.

The jobs the film stands for

Roofing is a broad trade, and our work runs from the ridge to the gutter. The main jobs are these.

Two terms from that list need a word. EPDM is a rubber membrane that arrives as one big sheet and is stuck down across the flat deck. GRP is glass-reinforced plastic, often called fibreglass, which is laid wet and sets hard. Both are used where a pitched roof is not an option.

Houses, extensions and commercial buildings

Most people who contact us have a house with a particular fault: a stain on a bedroom ceiling, a tile in the garden, water running down the inside of a chimney breast. Others are planning bigger work, such as a new roof after years of patching, a flat roof on a rear extension or a replacement over a conservatory.

We also work on commercial buildings, where the roof may be a large flat area, a profiled metal sheet or an older pitched structure over a unit. The questions there are about access, safe working at height and keeping the business running. Whether the roof is on a railway terrace, a 1980s estate house or an industrial shed, the method has to suit the building, which is why we look before we quote.

Not sure whether your problem is a roofing one? Our page on whether it is a roof leak or condensation is a good starting point.

When a roof is leaking and cannot wait

Some jobs are not planned. A gale lifts tiles, or water starts to come through a ceiling. A leak or storm damage is something we put ahead of routine work, and the opening task is to make the roof safe. That might mean a temporary cover, a few refixed tiles or a patched flashing, so the weather stays out until the proper repair can be done.

The page on emergency roof repairs explains what happens on the day and what to photograph before anyone arrives. The lasting repair comes next, after the cause is traced and conditions allow safe working at height.

What happens after you enquire

You can ring 01793 626096, reach us through WhatsApp, or fill in the enquiry form found on each page here. A survey of the roof is arranged. After it the roof pictures arrive with a quote in writing, so the fault and the proposed fix are both on paper before any work starts.

Our advice is to keep the work to the least that will genuinely cure the trouble. When a repair will do, we say a repair will do. When the covering is finished, we say that instead, and we say why. If consent or a Building Regulations notification is involved, we explain what is needed, deal with the notification and tell you what to expect from the council, so there are no surprises after the roof is done.

When we finish, the site is tidied and the old material leaves with us. The workmanship is backed by a written 10-year guarantee.

Before you hire anyone, us or not

A good-looking film and a pleasant voice on the phone are not enough to go on. Insist on a quote on paper, find out what it takes in, and ask to see pictures of the fault. Find out whether the total includes VAT and scaffolding, because either can move the figure by a long way. Our guide to how to check a roofer is genuine sets out the steps, and what to do about a bad roofer explains your options if a job goes wrong. At the other end of the process, roof checks when buying a house covers what a buyer should ask.

We work from Swindon across the town and the places within 30 road miles. Our other local page, a round-up of barbers in Swindon, has nothing to do with roofs. It is there because the town is where we work every day, and we think it deserves a little attention beyond roofs. A job on a roof is only part of what makes somewhere a good place to live, and the shops, cafes and services around it matter just as much.
